Fly fishing is a challenging sport that can be satisfying on multiple levels. Even though you can learn the basics in a few hours it takes literally years to master all of it?s complexities

So what is this sport called fly fishing. Although fly fishing in North America is most commonly associated with trout and salmon fishing, it is effective at catching bass, pike, tarpon and even bluegill.

Fly fishing involves casting a line usually made of a monofilament nylon that is attached to a leader and a fly using a fly rod. The type of line, rod and fly you choose will depend on several factors such as fish species, water conditions and the time of year.

In order to get started you?ll need some basic fishing accessories like pliers, knife, first aid kit, lures and a fish net. It?s also a good idea to purchase a heavy jacket, gloves and waders . Quite often you?ll be fishing in cool water so you need to be prepared.

Also don?t forget to bring an extra set of dry clothing. Staying dry can be make all the difference between a pleasant outing and a miserable one.

Along with this standard fishing gear you need fly fishing specific equipment such as a fly rod, and fly fishing flies

Compared to other types of fishing rods, fly rods are typically longer and lighter. Graphite rods are a favorite among many fly fishermen due to light weight and flexibility but cost quite a bit more than fiberglass rods.

Casting is the most fundamental skill to learn in fly fishing. The basic casting action begins by flipping the rod up and backward over the shoulder until the l ine is strait and then sent forward. Continue this back and forth action to create a loop of fishing line

The goal is to generate enough line to reach your target fishing and softly land your fly on the surface of the water. With practice you?ll learn to cast your fly rod properly

Once you settle on your fly rod it?s time to your delve into your choice of flies. This is one area of fly fishing that challenges even the most experienced anglers. Flies can generally be categorized into dry flies or wet flies based on whether they float on the surface or sink.

Flies are made of natural and manmade materials such as feathers, hair, and plastics. They are then intricately wrapped around a metal hook. To be effective they need to imitate the look of various water insects or land insects.

Most new fly fishing enthusiast start out buying their flies but many venture into making their own. It?s quite challenging as it requires skill at choosing the right materials as well as being proficient at knot tying. The avid fly fisherman can have hundreds flies in their tackle box in the hopes having the perfect one when needed.

For the novice, fly fishing can begin with the passion for the outdoors and the desire to break away from a hectic life style. It progresses from being an excuse to wander around in beautiful surroundings to perfecting their fly casting technique and finally mastering the art of making their own flies.

At each stage there are triumphs and failures but in the end nothing beat the satisfaction of landing that big trophy fish.

Fly Fishing

Ancient Macedonian pottery paintings indicate that fly fishing, that is, fishing with a lure constructed of feathers to imitate an insect, was the first form of angling with a rod. Fly fishing differs from most other disciplines of fishing today because the fly must be cast on a fly rod, a very whippy, limber pole which is bent or “loaded” by a fly line. Whereas a bait fisherman uses the weight of his lure or bait to pull line out behind it when thrown, a fly fisher uses the weight of the line itself to bend and unbend his rod.

Hand fishing

It is possible to fish with minimal equipment by using only the hands. In the USA catching catfish in this way is known as noodling. In the British Isles, the practice of catching trout by hand is known as trout tickling.

Spear and bow fishing

Spear fishing is an ancient method of fishing and may be conducted with an ordinary spear or a specialised variant such as an eel spear or the trident. A small trident type spear with a long handle is used in the American South and Midwest for “gigging” bullfrogs with a bright light at night, or for gigging carp and other trash fish in the shallows.

Fishing nets

All fishing nets are meshes usually formed by knotting a relatively thin thread. Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon, although nets of organic polyamides such as wool or silk thread were common until recently and are still used in certain areas.

Fishing lines

Fish are caught with a fishing line by encouraging a fish to bite upon a fish hook or a gorge. A fishing hook will pierce the mouthparts of a fish and may be barbed to make escape less likely. A gorge is buried in the bait such that it would be swallowed end first. The tightening of the line would fix it cross-wise in the quarry's stomach or gullet and so the capture would be assured.

Ice fishing

Ice fishing is the practice of catching fish with lines and hooks through an opening in the ice on a frozen body of water. It is practised by hunter-gatherers such as the Inuit and by sportsmen in many cold climates.

What ever technique is you favorit, one thing is for certain fishing is a fantastic recreational hobby or sport. A growing number of people around the world is joining the fellowship of fishermen. More and more people are finding out about the relaxing effect fishing has. One could wonder why it is so. Maybee because the world surrounding us all is going faster and faster, and we need a breathing hole ones and a while to catch our breath. Fishing provides that hole! A lot of us has known it for years, some has just discovered it, and others will join in the future.

If you have decided to take a boat loan you need to keep a few points in consideration. First and the foremost thing you need to do is to decide which boat you wish to buy and find out its price, this will help you in determining how much funds do you need. The next thing is to unearth how much money you have to invest in the boat. Both these steps will help you in finding how much money you exactly need to borrow with a boat loan.

There are two types of boat loans available in the loan market ? secured and unsecured boat loan. Secured boat loan requires a borrower to put some kind of collateral to become eligible for the loan. Tenants can apply for an unsecured boat loan, which does not require a borrower to put a security against the loan. In the same way, homeowners who wish to protect their home from the risk of repossession too can apply for an unsecured boat loan.

Boat loans are offered at both fixed as well as variable rate. In case of a fixed rate loan, you will have to pay a fixed sum of money every month this loan option will help you in accommodating your budget each month. On the other hand, in variable rate loan or adjustable rate loan the interest rate fluctuates with market interest rate. This interest rate loan option will allow you to take advantage of the falling market interest rate. At this time, you can expect the lowest rates in recent history. Loans are now amortized over 15-20 years, require 20% minimum down payment and, fixed rates are from 5.5% to 6.75%.

Marine loans generally have no points on the loan. They are all “simple interest” loans with no pre-payment penalty. If you know you will only keep the boat 2-3 years then the “out of pocket” expense is surprisingly low. Many yacht buyers have a three-year “itch cycle”. That is, they keep a boat for three years, then they “get the itch” to sell it and try out another boat for three years. If your credit score is less than 600 then the situation may be difficult. Lenders mainly look at the debt to income ratio. Use only marine lenders, as most banks do not understand the yacht lending business and don?t lend for yachts valued over $100K.

If you know your income as shown on your tax returns will be not be at least 200% of your debts then ask for a “no-income verification” loan. Essex does these. Do take into consideration the various fees associated with the boat loan that sometime results in a low cost seeming loan turning out to be costly. A boat loan may accounts for fees such as underwriting fees, processing fees, cost of credit report, and other related costs. Make sure to consider all the cost involved which will help you in deciding which loan option is best suited to your needs.

When you reach out in the market to find the best boat loan there will be an enormous number of lenders offering you great loan deals. Now, you have to decide whether you want to undergo the lengthy stressful loan process or a fast, easy and cheap loan. The Majority of you will opt for the second option as everyone wishes to save his or her valuable time and money. Online lenders aim to provide you with the comfort of getting a cheap and fast boat loan arranged.

Online loans are easy to apply for. All you do is fill out an online application form with some of your personal and financial information. Lenders will get back to you with the loan deals they find appropriate for you. Don?t accept the very first loan deal you get. Search around, collect loan quotes from lenders and compare them to find the loan deal that you find to be perfect matching your needs and desires to the best

The Application Process

Some lenders will require a full written application, while others will take the application right over the phone. This primarily depends upon your loan amount ? the more you want to borrow, the more details need to be provided. The important thing to remember is to be as complete as possible and you will find the process will move along much more quickly. Include complete name, address, phone numbers, employment details, income as requested, details on home ownership (if applicable) and all monthly debt service.

When income verification is required, depending on the size of your loan request, you will probably be asked to provide copies of your tax returns for the past 2 years. You may also be asked to prepare a personal financial statement, which is simply a snapshot in time of your assets and liabilities and shows your net worth. The information requested is necessary to provide the best loan decision, so your cooperation is a plus.

Have all of the boat information available for the application, such as year, make, model, power, optional equipment and any upgrades. Identify the total cost, which will include

&amp#61607	the purchase price

&amp#61607	any equipment upgrades or additional accessories you may be considering

&amp#61607	any sales taxes that must be paid at the time of purchase

&amp#61607	registration, title, or documentation expenses.

You will be signing your application, which will include your authorization to have the prospective lender or financial service company examine your credit. If you do the application over the phone you will be verbally authorizing the credit review.

The Loan Underwriting Process

The boat loan decision process is, really, quite simple and straightforward. There are two major aspects that are examined You and The Boat. You:Your credit history will be reviewed for continuity and satisfactory repayment of present and past credit obligations, looking for loan amounts comparable to your request. Of particular interest will be the level of revolving debt (credit cards) you have and the limits of your credit cards, expressed as available credit.

Another important factor is debt to income ratio. The lender will look at your present monthly obligations and add the monthly payment for the boat loan (they also may add presumed operating and maintenance costs of the boat) to determine your monthly debt. They will compare this to current income as stated on the credit application or verified in the tax returns. Your net worth may be considered for stability and as a secondary source of repayment.

Many boat buyers are very worried about how their credit report will affect their ability to buy a boat. Most people will not need to worry about the effect of their credit history during the boat financing process.

However, you can be better prepared if you get a copy of your credit report to review before you apply for your boat loan. That way, if there are any errors you can take steps to correct them before you make your application.

If you have had credit problems, be prepared to discuss them honestly with a boat financing professional. Responsible boat loan professionals know there can be legitimate reasons for credit problems, such as unemployment, illness or other financial difficulties. If you had a problem that's been corrected, and your payments have been on time for a year or more, your credit may be considered satisfactory.

The boat loans industry grades a person?s credit like many other industries. Grades are based on payment history, amount of debt payment, equity position, bankruptcies, credit scores, etc.

Market Value

The process here is for the lender to be satisfied that the selling price reflects a realistic market value of the vessel, your down payment meets their guidelines and is in line with your credit profile, and they are comfortable with the loan-to-value. Other factors come into play, such as the type and age of the boat you are buying.

The lender will research the market value of your boat through various sources that include price guides, comparable boats on the market, discussions with yacht brokers about the boat and what other comparable products are selling for, and a marine survey by a professional with whom the lender is comfortable.

Bank Catch 22

Sometimes banks say they are “interested in yacht lending” but they are really only interested in finding that “one in a hundred golden borrower”… so you waste your time filling out forms only to be rejected if you don?t have 110% perfect credit. Have a current copy of you tax return to fax them for a quick verbal approval before proceeding.

Avoid Stamp Fees

For those who live in Florida keep in mind if you are traveling, sign your loan documents out of the state of Florida to avoid paying “State Document Stamp Fees” If you sign your loan paperwork in Florida you will pay a state fee of $3.50 per $1000 of the loan amount.

Lender Pre-Approval

Loan interest payments are deductible as “second home mortgage interest expenses” unless you already take this deduction on a second home.

Seller Financing

Concerning “seller financing”? It may be possible in a very few, very rare cases like with some “501- c(3)” charities. But you will need 40% down and are severely limited to only the boats they have taken in as donations (it will NOT be your dreamboat). Ask your broker what is available here. Because yachts can be easily moved out of the country, 99.9% of all sellers will not agree to seller financing.

Factor in Foreign Exchange Rates

Foreign currency exchange rates can have a substantial impact on the price of yachts.

You should be aware of how this can affect prices. In recent memory, the Euro was trading at .88 to the dollar that is, one US dollar would buy .88 Euros. Now the Euro costs 1.26 dollars. So a yacht priced at 200,000 Euros used to cost $176,000 but now costs $252,000 (with a 1.26 rate)! As you can now see, the dollar has really weakened against the Euro. So, Americans won?t be buying many European owned yachts as long as the dollar remains weak. Foreign exchange traders say this is happening because Arab oil producers are afraid to hold dollars for political reasons and they are now demanding Euros in payment for crude oil.

Also, the Arabs have dumped billions of dollars in savings and bought Euros and Euro-denominated investments instead. So, the Euro is becoming the “currency of the world” and this trend will probably continue. On the other hand, if you have Euros, you should be buying yachts owned by Americans and take them back to Europe for re-sale. Dollar-denominated yachts are cheap for Europeans now.

Before I even begin this article, let me preface it by saying that I'm not referring to the multi colored pieces of rubber that Bass fishermen are so partial to. When I refer to the term 'worm fishing', I'm referring to live worms or “the good old American worm”, as Hank Hill puts it. Most anglers are familiar with fishing with live worms, but unfortunately don't do it properly. Most anglers believe that simply “threading” a live worm onto a hook should suffice as 'worm fishing', but the bottom line is that it doesn't. Live worms should be presented in the most natural way possible and there's a simple and easy way to do this that most anglers don't realize.

The simple and easy way to present a worm naturally is through the use of gang hooks. What are gang hooks, you ask? Gang hooks are simply two small hooks tied in tandem, thus enabling the angler to hook a worm outstretched, as nature intended. Nature didn't intend for live worms to be presented in the form of a “worm ball”. A “worm ball” is when a live worm is simply hooked over and over again onto a single hook (a single hook that's quite large, I might add). How natural does a “worm ball” appear? Especially when you think about how a worm would appear in the wild?

Another great worm fishing tip is to have an efficient way to carry your worms while fishing. This might be the most practical worm fishing tip that I've ever seen. The most efficient way to carry live worms while fishing is to employ a bait bag. You can make a bait bag yourself or buy one, it makes no difference, the point is that if you fish with live worms, you should be using one. A bait bag is simply a small bag that hangs off of your fishing vest, belt, or shirt and carries your live worms. In other words, you buy worms from the store as normal, and then when you get to your fishing area simply remove the worms from the container they were purchased in and place them into the bait bag. Then while you're fishing, your worms are right there at your fingertips, ready to use. No more fumbling around with containers every time that you need to bait up!

Both of these worm fishing tips will help you catch more fish while fishing with live worms. One from a practical standpoint (the gang hooks), and one from an efficiency standpoint (a bait bag). You see, the more time that can be spent, with your line in the water, the more success you will have (the bait bag). And the more natural a worm can be presented to the fish, the more success you will have (use of gang hooks). The bottom line is that if these worm fishing tips are employed, your catch rate will increase by up to 4 times!

I'm a worm fisherman, primarily, and although I don't like flea flicking, my favorite move of all time is A river Runs Through It. In that movie the reverend McLain says one of my favorite quotes of all time, “Anyone who does not know how to catch a fish, should not be able to disgrace a fish by catching it”. He was referring to flea flicking, but I've always believed that the same thing holds true for worm fishing. Remember, when the proper techniques are employed, worm fishing is every bit the “art” that fly-fishing claims itself to be.

In the Ontario Fisherman, the editor and field staff have constantly promoted what we feel to be worthwhile ideals for Ontario's two-million-plus anglers i.e. commitments to catch-and-release sportfishing, support for fish-rearing and hatchery projects, opposition to gill netting and incidental catches, and the belief that fishing should be a shared, family experience. In my own fishing, I have tried to put into practice a “Take a Kid Fishing” attitude.

Why? That's simple. As a tot, as soon as I had mastered the simple toilet-training routine and graduated to the bailing-can approach, my Dad began taking me fishing. In the late fifties, fishing Lake Erie in its heyday, Dad saw to it that my brothers and I had the necessary tools-of-the-trade to go fishing- whenever the mood struck us (and the lake let us)- rods 'n' reels, tackle, bait and a small boat and motor. But he just didn't turn us loose on the lake to wreak havoc. Systematically, Dad began educating us on the important skills we would need to ensure safety, success, and enjoyment. First came the boating course- rules, safety, handling and control, navigat?ing, etc.

Once we demonstrated competence and good judgment, the fishing program followed- rigging, baits, hotspots, fish-fighting and landing technique, trolling basics, and much more. Secret fishin' songs were sung without a thought to the quality of voice or coherence of the lyrics. Afterwards, long fish-cleaning sessions were followed by memorable fish fries (supervised by Mom) back at the cottage. Perch, black bass, blue pickerel, yellows, sheephead, and silver bass- we learned to value them all- for sport or food.

Mostly, though, we found enjoyment in the relaxation and camaraderie of fishing together. Great, old photos- now treasured memories- attest to our total preoccupation with fishing during the summer break. Some even offer proof of many, successful outings. With Dad in the boat, we were assured of success- he instilled a positive, confident feeling at each outing. Take a kid fishing? He knew when and, I suspect, why.

When the family cottage was sold and a new, lakeside home was bought, it seemed only natural that priority be given to checking out the fishing and locating new hotspots. Didn't take him long either. By this time, sons were grown, but grandsons came along to share Dad's love of the lake- and fishing. Three generations in a car-topper really brought out the best in Dad- the best stories, a little reminiscing, the old songs- the good, old days.

It was Dad who took us on our first-ever, “remote” fishing trip- Lake Kippawa, P.Q.- and, even though he did get a little “disoriented” going in (and lost one night), that trip is the most memorable of all, The fishing wasn't too great, but that didn't matter- we had more to learn, and lots to laugh about. Now old enough for the pub, we saw another side of fishing- fraternity. Dad's technique was subtle, yet effective and enduring.

Fortunately, we were able to share a few such trips with Dad over recent summers. “Outta school and outta here”, he once said to me in anticipation of a planned trip. He could hardly wait- we could hardly wait . Dad made it fun. It didn't matter to him that he wouldn't be home for his own birthday.

Dad passed away recently, unexpectedly- too soon. This summer we had planned a fly-in-what would have been Dad's first-ever. In addition to our sorrow and loss, there is disappointment. He so loved the outdoors- scenery, fishing, hiking, birds and wildlife- this trip might have been his once-in-a-lifetime fishing trip. My brothers, my son and I will probably still go- Dad would have insisted that we go anyways, and bring him back “just a taste”. It won't be the same though, it can't be.

Now that it's my turn to initiate my son to the “remote” fishing experience, I wonder if I am ready. Can I do what my Dad had done- get a kid hooked on fishing for a lifetime?

To readers planning fishing trips, let me suggest this- take your Dad (or Grampa) fishing. Many of you probably already do just that. Many of the rest of you probably owe Dad (and yourselves) a son-father trip. The rewards can be far more satisfying than you might possibly imagine. I was twice-blessed- my Dad took his kids fishing regularly. Secondly, I had the good fortune of being able to return the favour on a few occasions. I know I will never forget Dad or the things we shared- like fishing.

Guys, take your Dad fishing- this year. You'll be glad you did- and, possibly, sorry if you don't.

For my Dad, Jack Rivers

This article was orginally written just after the passing of my father in 1986. The message of this article is as relevant today as it was then.

Online since 1998 by long-time OFM field editor, Bill Rivers, the Ontario Fisherman is now taking on a new look, but remains committed to showcasing “the best of Ontario sportfishing”.

As spring heads into full swing, it can only mean one thing. Springtime means trout fishing. Whether you prefer to fish in lakes that have been stocked with trout or rivers that are home to native trout, there are a few basic things to keep in mind about catching these wonderful and equally beautiful fish. The first and most important thing to keep in mind as far as trout fishing is concerned is your fishing gear.

When I say fishing gear, I'm referring to your fishing rod, fishing reel, and fishing line. For trout fishing in normal situations, nothing heavier than light action rods and reels should be used. I prefer ultra light gear, but nothing heavier than light action is permissible, in my opinion. Trout fishing is a lot more fun and a ton more effective when the proper fishing gear is employed. If you're one of those anglers who use 1 rod and reel for all of your fishing, you need to change this. Using gear that's too heavy for trout fishing will cost you not only bites, but also fish, it's as simple as that. Your fishing reel should be spooled with line no heavier than 6 pound test. I prefer 4 pound test, but 6 pound is the maximum. The first lesson of trout fishing 101 is to have the proper fishing gear.

The second lesson of trout fishing 101 is to use the proper hooks. Yep, I said hooks. It seems as if nothing could be simpler than a fish hook, buy there are certain kinds that should be used. That kind is called gang hooks. Gang hooks are simply 2 small hooks tied in tandem, rather than 1 single hook. Is this simple? Yes it is, but it's also very important. You see, a set of gang hooks enables the angler to present bait in a totally natural manner. They also enable the angler to present twice as much bait when using something like salmon eggs or Powerbait. Both of these aspects are an incredible advantage to the average trout angler.

The third lesson of trout fishing 101 is to become as efficient as possible. The more time that you can spend with your line in the water, the better your chances of catching a fish, it's as simple as that. This means that the more efficient you become, the more time your line spends in the water. Employing things like a bait bag is a great way to become more efficient. A bait bag is simply a small bag that hangs from your vest, which you can carry your bait in. For example, if you fish with live worms, you simply place the worms in the bag and go fishing. A bait bag is the only way to carry them. With the help of a bait bag, you spend less time fumbling around for your worms and have them waiting right there at your fingertips.

These simple tips complete the trout fishing 101 lesson. Begin using them when you go trout fishing and you'll be well on your way to catching fish. Remember what Steven Wright said of us anglers, “There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore looking like an idiot.” Hopefully, these tips will help you avoid the 'looking like an idiot' part of that quote.

This may sound like a stupid title for an article, but it's true. When you think of a fishing hook, what do you think of? Just a plain old fishing hook that you put some bait on and try to catch a fish, right? Well my fishing mentor took the concept of a simple fishing hook and transformed it into the perfect fishing hook for all types of bait fishing. I think the concept was used in saltwater fishing, but he brought the concept to freshwater fishing.

This concept is the gang hook. A gang hook is simply two hooks tied in tandem. Two small hooks, hooks that are smaller than you may be accustomed to using. Using smaller hooks makes the hooks all but undetectable top the fish. It's a beautiful system. Not only is it a beautiful system, but it's a very effective system as well. Although gang hooks are effective for all types of bait fishing, they are the most effective way to present a live worm that I've ever seen.

So how do you get your hands on a set or two of gang hooks? Simple, you can go somewhere like JRWfishing and purchase them or you can do a little research and tie them yourself. Just do a search on the internet for fishing knots to find out how to tie a “Snell knot”. Once you can tie a Snell knot, you're good to go. Simply tie two in tandem and you've made yourself a set of gang hooks! Now just devise a great way to carry them, and you're ready to catch some fish.

This is when a fishing hook isn't really a fishing hook. It's simple, easy, and incredibly effective. The bottom line is that once you begin using gang hooks, you won't use any other method for fishing live bait, especially worms. It's as simple as that.

As you might guess, South Florida offers just a few fishing opportunities. Here is an overview on South Florida light tackle fishing.

When many people think of fishing in Florida, they think of either deep sea fishing or bass fishing for a lunker in an inland lake. There is another type of fishing that is drawing fisherman by the thousands to south Florida. It is light tackle fishing on the tidal flats. This is one of the most challenging fishing experiences that can be found anywhere. It is an experience that combines just about everything that makes fishing worthwhile.

It is very often sight fishing. It involves pulling a monster tarpon out of eight inches of water by dropping a fly right on its snout. The use of light tackle makes it much more sporting. The challenge of pulling in a 30 pound fish with 8 pound test line is what makes the true sports fisherman drool with anticipation.

One of the things that contributes to the overall fishing experience is the scenic surroundings. It is hard to beat the Florida Keys and the offshore flats for natural beauty. The brackish waters on the edges of the Everglades is another place where the surroundings compete with the fishing experience for your attention.

Unless you live in south Florida and have a lot of time to spend on honing your light tackle skills, you really need an experienced guide. Luckily there are plenty of them available and they are not prohibitively expensive. The guides are needed not only to bring you quickly and surely to the fish, but also to give you the necessary training in the use of the light tackle used. This is especially true for the use of the fly fishing techniques that are used in the extremely shallow water.

Selecting the right guide is the key to a successful South Florida light tackle fishing expedition. There are several factors to consider. Personality is important. It is always good to spend a bit of time talking with a prospective guide before committing yourself. A good relationship between client and guide is often a key to success due to the close quarters involved. The boat is usually a skiff or other smaller flat bottom boat. Another factor is the location of the guide?s take off spot compared to the fishing areas. You are paying for time here and want to spend it fishing and not traveling. If you take a bit of time and select the right guide, you will soon be off on one of the greatest and most challenging fishing adventures available anywhere.

Many anglers are looking for better and more effective way to catch more trout. In this article I will outline a sample, yet amazingly effective technique to catch more and bigger trout. The technique is quite simple and with a little practice is as good a technique as there is for catching trout in the flowing water of rivers and streams. Obviously the first thing that's needed for this technique is a river or stream. Hopefully you have the ability to wade into the water to get better casting angles, but this isn't absolutely necessary.

The only fishing gear that's needed for this technique are small barrel swivels, pre-tied gang hooks, split shot sinkers, and live worms. That's all that's needed for this trout fishing technique. I would suggest a bait bag for carrying your live worms as well, but this isn't integral. A bait bag simply saves you time and makes you a ton more efficient by enabling you to have your live worms at your fingertips. In any event, the items in bold are all that are integral to the technique. Another aspect of this technique is to use light fishing line. I prefer 4 lb. test and 6 lb test is tolerable. Any line larger than 6 lb. test for this technique should not be used.

To rig up, start by grabbing the end of your line and tying on a small barrel swivel. Now tie one of your pre-tied gang hooks to the opposite end of the barrel swivel. At this point, add a split shot ore two to the line above the barrel swivel (on the opposite side of the gang hooks). The goal is to have your offering bounce naturally off of the bottom as it flows downstream, so adding and removing split shot will be necessary, depending on the flow of the water. Now add a live worm to your gang hooks and your ready to cast out (if the worms are really large, simply pinch them in half).

At this point you want to cast out and let your line flow naturally with the current, keeping your line taught the entire time to detect bites. With a little practice, distinguishing between bites and the bottom is simple. Remember you want your offering to “roll” along the bottom as it flows downstream, so you will feel bottom. If you don't, keep adding split shot one at a time, until you do. Another aspect of this technique is getting snagged. Getting snagged while using this technique is inevitable, as a matter of fact my fishing mentor used to say, “if you're not getting snagged, you're not fishing in the right place.” It's really no big deal. The technique is so effective that after a while, snags won't bother you at all.

The bottom line is that this technique is the most effective trout catching technique that I've ever used. As a matter of fact, this technique works for any species of fish in a river or stream situation. Remember, practice makes you better and better, so the more you can practice the technique, the more proficient you will become. Once you become proficient, you'll have a hard time using any other technique to catch fish in the flowing waters of rivers and streams. In fact the 3 simple pieces of fishing gear, live worms, and a bait bag will become all you need to have a great time and catch a lot of fish.
